Part 1 of our discussion. Jeff and Todd talk Star Wars, the great cultural mythology of the modern age. We talk about our own histories with Star Wars, each of the trilogies, other films in the Star Wars universe, Clone Wars, the Mandalorian. Also the cinematic genius of George Lucas, Joseph Campbell and the monomyth. This was our introductory “overview”, even though we couldn’t help going deep into a couple of topics.
In this episode we discuss the two creation stories in Genesis, the Documentary Hypothesis and the P and J sources, differences in their vocabulary and portrayals of God, comparisons with the Babylonian Enuma Elish, creative wordplay, and possible ways to think about all this from a religious perspective.
A look at matter and spirit, the corporeal and incorporeal using the thought device of a spectrum of materiality and ways of dividing it up, and pulling ideas from the thought of Daniel Dennett, Elizabeth Grosz, Baruch Spinoza, and David Bentley Hart.
